So many romance novels depict a beautiful virginal heroine, whose main struggle is accessorizing an outfit/competing with a mistress when we know she will win/dealing with class status/overcoming and dealing with her new feelings toward the main character as they directly oppose her long cherished morals, insert other repeatedly used plot point here. I enjoy reading those stories, but this book is something different. It acknowledges that life is not always ribbons, love and ball gowns. I guarantee that it will make you uncomfortable...but are love stories only for pretty, perfect people with no baggage, regrets or mistakes? At its core, it is about how people respond and work through terrible circumstances to find peace or redemption. It is a story of two lonely and scarred people who lived through trauma and have found their way back to one another--come what may. This process is not pretty but I did not come away thinking that anyone was forced. As another reviewer mentioned, it seemed that the hero was suffering from PTSD, and that the heroine came from her own abusive situation. If you can accept that and are willing to spend several hours in that space, then you should read this book because the character development is so well done and I give the author credit for representing something new.
People who like unconventional romances, who are willing to delve into darker subject matter will probably appreciate this well-written book. If you like more lighthearted, normal romance novels, I really do not recommend that you read this. You will absolutely hate it.

The Duke Captive Winter Garden series Adele Ashworth 9780061474842 Books Reviews
The plot in this book could have been so good. It could have been deep and meaningful but it turned out hateful and rapey. The story opens with the hero seeking revenge for a kid napping that is never fully explained. The heroines sisters evidentily kidnapped him (for no apparent reason... diamonds?) and she tried to save him but couldn't (for no apparent reason). So he hates her for what happened even though he can't remember what really happened. The heroine appears strong and smart but willingly does whatever this guy asks of her. And he is a complete jerk for the entire book... until they have sex (the rapey part) and then he falls in love with her. (Yuck)
There are some small parts of the book I liked for example I started to like the heroine (but that tanked) and the plot could have been good (that tanked worse). Now I'm eight dollars poorer and I'll never get back those five hours of my life. On the bright side the hero makes me appreciate my husband.
I don't understand the critics of this book. Do you not understand tortured souls? This was not as some depicted. The main characters came full circle and ended up in a better place. Loved it.
Although I had read all of Adele Ashworth's other books, I had avoided this one because of some pretty harsh reviews and a storyline that didn't really appeal. I should have trusted this proven and talented storyteller and writer more, because I finally read it and loved it. Sure, it's a little dark and the lead characters are flawed, but it was a great story of hard-earned second chances, forgiveness, and personal growth. Hope she is hard at work writing a new book, now that I've read them all. I'm a huge fan!!!
I enjoyed reading this book. I wanted more background information but need to read the other books to get that.
I was looking for something to replace Kathlees Woodiwiss and think I've found it with this author! Stand alone romances are best!
This book is disturbing. I regret not looking at reviews before reading it. The rape fantasy is disturbing. The two main characters are unlikable and unredeeming; this only grows worse as the story progresses. Viola's lack of true aid to a kidnap victim and intimacy with a drugged, chained, semi-conscious man reveal her to be a person little troubled by morals or a conscience. I hated the book. One can only hope this was an early work by the author and that her writing improved over time.
Wht a love story! Man, the ending almost wrecked me. I cried when he read the diary and saw the pictures. It broke my heart. But.... It was such a redemption for him. Wht great chemistry and love bt the main characters. So sweet and so funny at the end. Wht a great story. 10 stars! There are a lot of unfair reviews for this book tht will cloud the minds of some potential readers...but once u read the book through its in entirety, u will understand how everything played out the way it did and u will love it as much as I did. I love tortured soul story's, they are much more emotional and worthy, as this one. LOVED IT! To b honest the bad reviews are the reason I bought it. Had to see for myself and, yep, they were wrong. So thanks
